"Slumming" is a derogatory term, saying something "slums" is like saying is "sucks". There are no bands I know of that would say they do this... "Up and Coming" is a term for bands that have not yet achieved success, by whatever measure, financial or reputation; or for bands that are new. "Pocket", like "Socket", is a term for a classic Go-Go groove, old-school, meaning it existed 10 years ago and was played then. I am not a musician, so, I can't give a "technical" description of it. Another beat is called the "Bounce Beat". This is considered to have been evolved by TCB from a sound that BackYard was already using, but has now been picked up and made universal among a class of bands that play primarily bounce instead of pockets. A visible distinction is heavy use of Conga drums by old-school pocket Go-Go, and heavy use of Timbales or sometimes Roto-Toms to play bounce. Another visible distinction is that many if not most of the bands playing the bounce beat are "youngins", that is, teenagers playing at shows where there is no alcohol, and many if not most of the bands playing the old school pockets are playing to 21+ crowds, in bars. > I would like to also tell you that your web site is very informative and > until I reached your site, I wasn't aware that there was any information > about go-go music on the web.
